The Egyptian scarab beetle played several different roles in ancient Egyptian culture, making it challenging to define succinctly. Because of their association with the sun and the sun god Ra, scarabs were thought to be symbols of prosperity and good fortune. Scarabs were symbols of rebirth, resurrection, transformation, and growth. People sometimes wore them as amulets to attract good luck and repel bad luck. Wearing an amulet of a scarab beetle in Egypt was also thought to protect the wearer from illness and ensure resurrection in the next life. The vast majority of scarab beetles in Egyptian artifacts are positive in nature, functioning as expressions of hope and goodwill.
